This website focuses on prior knowledge, making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, evaluating, and synthesizing. Students can roll the mouse over an image to learn more about each of the comprehension skills in the book shown.

Kids Click is a search engine created by librarians for kids. The best part of this search engine is that is gives only kid friendly results when a subject is searched. This search engine combined with internet filters could help guide students to appropriate educational sites. This also could help parents and teachers pre-choose kid friendly websites and pictures.

This website allows students to meet Authors and Illustrators of their favorite children’s book. The information is presented in an interview format for students to read. For the younger students a teacher or parent would need to assist with reading the information.

Scholastic has thousands of lesson plans, discussion guides, and units for all grades. The search bar on top of the website allows teachers to search through lesson plans by grade or subject. The lesson plans are high quality with original ideas.

Symbaloo is a great site where you can post links that look like apps that you want the student to use. It makes it easier for the students to know what websites are appropriate to use.

FunFonix is a site where teachers can create their own phonics and spelling worksheets. Build a word worksheets can also be generated. This is a great resource to use in collaboration with your currently reading and phonics curriculum. This would allow you to differentiate instruction.

Class Dojo is a website where teachers can track students behavior through awarding points or taking away points from students. This fun website can be accessed via app on the teachers iphone where they can track point throughout the day. This is a great website to track data of student behavior. I would use this site to award points for students to use to buy “prizes”.

Socrative is a smart student response system. Teachers can create exit tickets, multiple choice questions, quizzes, and speed races for students to complete using their own technology such as iphones, computers, and ipads. One teacher has students post replies on a thread to question or reply to a quiz. She uses this during her writing activities for centers during reading groups. The answers are then posted on the active board for everyone to see.

Mighty books has animated stories and songs for students to listen to. This is a great resource to use with students who do not have access to English books at home. This also would help students who are ELL and need to hear high quality reading in English.

Blog Post
I think the author raises a great thesis for trying to bring balance to using both non-technology and technology. I see the need for keeping up with current technology and allowing students to complete work using it. However, I do think the human brain needs a break from the constant multi tasking. Providing students with a break every now and then where they are just simply concentrating on complex text could allow their brain to focus on what it is thinking instead of the million other thoughts it has going all at once.
I am still not sure what it would like to be a high school teacher battling for teenagers attention as I was trying to teach them complex material . Would they revolt against the idea of slowing down their reading to become deliberate thinkers? Do we need to think of it like we do medicine “you might not like it but I am going to give it to you anyways for your own good”?
When I first started teaching I came from an education program that equipped me to do most things through technology. However, my school was very traditional and was not equipped to do what I had been trained to do. This caused me to see the benefit of teaching and using foundational skills in the classroom. Eventually, I was able to merge both technology and “traditional” teaching into my school day. This taught me how important it is to balance new ideas with the old. I am reminded of that old girl scout song “meet new friends but keep the old one is silver and the other is gold”. I believe this article is just beginning to touch on what it will take to “keep both” and view them as valuable in the classroom.
